There are smart phones that use smart thermometer - I believe this is what you have in your photograph. Smart Thermometer is a simple app to use the temperature sensors in your phone to show the temperature near your phone. But in many smart phones, there is no temperature sensor, smart phone is just a gadget that connects to a thermometer somewhere in a central location to show you the readings - in this app you can only see for example what is the temperature in Geneva now, and everybody reads the same temperature regardless of where you are.
In general, a thermometer has two important elements: the temperature sensor in which some physical change occurs with temperature, plus some means of converting this physical change into a numerical value.
